The Great Wall Marathon is widely regarded as one of the most challenging road races on the planet. Held annually in May on the Huangyaguan section of the Great Wall near Tianjin, the course demands that runners conquer 5,164 stone steps — many of them uneven, steep, and centuries old. This isn't a race for a personal best; it's a race for a personal story.
Since its inception in 1999, the event has drawn runners from over 60 countries, all seeking the extraordinary experience of running on one of humanity's greatest architectural achievements. The combination of altitude, heat, and relentless verticality makes every finish a genuine accomplishment.
Beyond the Wall itself, the surrounding landscape of terraced hills, watchtowers, and rural Chinese villages adds a dimension of beauty that no city marathon can match. It's a race that rewards those who slow down enough to look around.
The marathon begins and ends at the Huangyaguan fortress, a restored section of the Wall about 120 kilometres north of Tianjin. The first kilometres take runners up onto the Wall, where the infamous steps begin — steep ascents and hair-raising descents that demand as much mental strength as physical endurance.
After the Wall sections, the course descends into local villages and farmland, offering a brief reprieve on flatter terrain before the final climb back onto the Wall for the finish. The full marathon covers the Wall twice; the half marathon tackles it once. Either way, the steps leave their mark on your legs for days.
