Halong Bay is one of the natural wonders of Asia — over 1,600 limestone islands and islets rising from emerald waters, draped in mist and jungle, recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site of outstanding universal value. Running alongside it is an experience that defies comparison.
The Halong Bay Heritage Marathon takes place in November, when northern Vietnam's summer heat has broken and cool, clear days are the norm. The timing is perfect for distance running, and the bay's morning mists add an ethereal quality to the early kilometres.
With four distance options from 5K to full marathon, the event welcomes runners and walkers alike. Many participants combine the race with a cruise on the bay — turning race weekend into a multi-day exploration of one of the planet's most photogenic landscapes.
The marathon starts at Bai Chay tourist wharf, with the limestone karsts of the bay visible from the starting line. The route follows the coastal road east, offering unobstructed views of the karsts emerging from the water — their shapes shifting as the light changes through the morning.
Runners pass local fishing villages, seafood markets, and the Sun World Halong complex before the course loops through the broader Quang Ninh area. The terrain is gently undulating — enough to keep things interesting without the brutal climbs of mountain races. The final stretch returns along the waterfront, with the bay's islands providing a spectacular backdrop to the finish.
