Tallinn's Old Town is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Northern Europe — a UNESCO World Heritage Site where 13th-century church spires, merchant houses, and cobblestone lanes have survived wars and centuries virtually intact. Running through it feels less like a race and more like time travel.
The Tallinn Marathon takes place in September, when the Estonian capital is dressed in early autumn colours and the Baltic air is cool and crisp — ideal running conditions. The course is predominantly flat, making it a strong choice for runners targeting personal bests while still wanting a culturally rich destination.
Estonia's digital-forward culture means the event is superbly organised, with seamless registration, live tracking, and a compact, walkable city that makes race logistics effortless. It's the rare marathon that combines heritage depth with modern ease.
The race begins at Freedom Square, the gateway between the medieval Old Town and the modern city. Runners immediately enter the Old Town's narrow lanes, passing beneath the Gothic towers of the Town Hall and through Raekoja plats, one of Europe's oldest continuously used market squares.
The route climbs briefly to Toompea Hill for views over the city's red rooftops and church spires before descending to the harbour district and heading northeast along the Pirita coastal road. This stretch runs alongside the Baltic Sea, with wide views across Tallinn Bay and the distant silhouette of Finland's coast. The return passes through Kadriorg Park, Peter the Great's baroque palace grounds, before looping back through the Old Town to the finish.
